Garbage day is a personality test (and the couch costs $60)

Nothing exposes a house's dynamics like the week nobody took the carts out. Learn the system once and it stops being a fight.

Three carts, one calendar. Guelph collects household waste in three carts, and the City updated its sorting guide in January 2026, so whatever you did at home is not necessarily what happens here. Look up your address on the City's collection calendar, print it, and put it on the fridge. Then download the free Guelph Waste app and turn on reminders. It sends a note the night before. This alone fixes most houses.

Set-out is early. Carts, and anything you have booked for pickup, need to be at the curb before 6:30 a.m. on your day. If you are a night person, that means the night before.

The couch problem. A large item (furniture, mattress, appliance, a bike, a barbecue) does not go in a cart and does not go on the curb by itself. The City will collect it: $60 plus HST for the first item and $27 plus HST for each extra one, booked by phone on 519-767-0598 and paid by card. Fridges and air conditioners cost an extra $26.55 plus HST for the refrigerant. Or you drive it to the Waste Resource Innovation Centre at 110 Dunlop Drive yourself.

Do not just leave it out. A large item left at the curb without a booking is a fine under the City's waste bylaw, and the whole street knows whose it was.

The free option. If the couch still works, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Guelph sells used furniture and appliances and will pick some donations up. Phone 519-767-9752 first to check what they take. That is the difference between paying $60 and getting a tax receipt. The same logic runs in reverse when you are furnishing: the ReStore is where a $400 desk becomes a $40 one.

Missed pickup. If your cart was out on time and untouched, the collection contractor's line is 1-800-561-1655.

House rule that works. One person owns the calendar for the month, and the job rotates. Put it in the group chat as a pinned message. The person who forgets buys the pizza.
