Stop paying $3.50 cash: the Guelph bus, decoded

Guelph Transit is small enough to learn in a week. Here is the week.

The fares, as of January 1, 2026. Cash is $3.50, and cash is the wrong answer. With an OnYourWay card an adult ride is $2.90 and a post-secondary student ride is $2.35, and either way you get a day pass for $8.70. Transfers are automatic and free within 90 minutes of your first tap.

The fare cap is the whole trick. Once you have paid for 34 rides in a calendar month, every ride after that is free. So the most a student pays in a month is $79.90 and an adult $98.60, however much they ride. There is no monthly pass to decide about. Tap, and the card works it out.

If you are on campus. Students at the university and the college in town do not buy a pass from the City at all; it comes through student association fees. Ask before you load money on a card. Everyone else gets the reduced fare by showing proof of enrolment at a Canadian post-secondary school.

The late route. The 99 Mainline runs until 12:15 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and it is the spine of the system, downtown through the main corridors. Other routes also run to 12:15 on those days. Sunday is thinner; check before you rely on it.

Plan trips in an app, not in your head. The City's trip planner is on the Guelph Transit site, and the usual transit apps carry the live schedule. Customer service is 519-822-1811.

Detours to know about this year. Routes 1, 2 and 15 are on detour until October 1. St. George construction affects several routes until the end of the year, and a longer list (3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20 and the 99) is detoured from mid August to December 31. If your stop seems to have vanished, it probably moved a block.

One more thing. Youth 13 to 17 ride free on weekday evenings after 5, weekends, holidays, and all summer. Not you, probably, but useful for a visiting sibling.
